Theme: On How to Gain Knowledge: Discussion of Plato’s Meno
Classical Christian schools confidently claim that we teach virtue. Is such teaching possible? In Plato’s Meno, Socrates expresses skepticism that teaching virtue – or, indeed, that any transferring of knowledge from one person to another – can be done. Let’s dive into this short, influential dialogue together to find rejuvenation in considering Socrates’ provocative challenge. At the Alcuin retreat, we will enjoy discussion, food and drink, and spending time with kindred colleagues. Our events will feature a feast of words from special guest Dr. Matthew Smith, president of Hildegard College. We will conclude the weekend with an excursion to the Getty Villa to immerse ourselves in the art and architecture of the ancient world. Participants will be asked to read Plato’s Meno prior to the retreat. This text, along with the presentations, will form a basis for discussions about the relationship between teaching, learning, and virtue. We hope you will join us for this collegial retreat.
