Theme: On How to Gain Knowledge: Discussion of Plato’s Meno
In classical Christian schools we confidently claim that we teach virtue. However, Socrates himself was skeptical that such teaching was possible. Not only that, but Socrates even called into question whether teaching—considered as transferring knowledge from one person—was possible either. These challenges can be found in Plato’s Meno, a short dialogue that has loomed large in the history of education. Let’s dive into this text together, experiencing Socrates’ provocative challenge and emerging refreshed and rejuvenated. The retreat majors on discussion, good food, and good drink. There will also be a feast of words from our special guest, Dr. Matthew Smith, president of Hildegard College, as well as an excursion to the Getty Villa to immerse ourselves in art like that which Socrates himself experienced in ancient Athens. Participants will be asked to read Plato’s Meno prior to the retreat. This text, along with the presentations, will form a basis for discussions about the relationship between teaching, learning, and virtue. We hope you will join us for this stimulating and collegial retreat.
