Classical Christian Education and the Habits of the Heart

February 27-28, 2026

Retreat Description

The Alcuin Fellowship, Christ College, and the Davenant Institute invite you to a gathering of leaders and teachers as we consider the ways in which classical Christian education is directed toward cultivating the habits of students’ hearts.  While cultivating students’ hearts is a lofty philosophical and theological goal, it is achieved largely through the intentional implementation of incredibly practical habits within classrooms and schools.  This retreat with therefore focus on important questions such as: What are the goals of classical Christian education?  What does it mean to have well-ordered loves?  How does this relate to a well-ordered mind?  How should our answers to these questions impact daily routines and in-class pedagogy?

Each year the Alcuin Fellowship conducts a national topical retreat for leaders and teachers who are part of the renewal of classical Christian education.  We invite you to join us as together we examine the distinctive and transformative goals of classical Christian education and explore practical ways that they affect how teachers and students alike order their lives throughout the school day.  Whether you are an educator or administrator interested in growing in your understanding of classical pedagogy, a parent committed to learning more about the Great Tradition, or a lifelong learner seeking to connect with others who are committed to the renewal of classical Christian education, you will benefit from this conference.  You will deepen your understanding of important themes in classical education, broaden your community of likeminded people, and be encouraged in our common task of shaping generations through transformative education.  Some remarkable people will be at the retreat, and we hope you will join us. We ask that each participant purchase a copy of the book You Are What You Love: and read through it prior to attending.
